Automobiles & the built environment

It is clear to anyone who has designed a public space, building or group of buildings that the requirements for the automobile have become the main drivers—because of the amount of space taken up by roads and parking.  The unfortunate result is the auto-dominated environment we experience all around us.

Mitigating the impact of the car should be the primary concern of city officials, architects, planners if we are to build the kinds of comfortable places that people love:  walkable, scaled to the human (and not the car), and supportive of people interacting, and forming community.
